Saw Palmetto Plus addresses androgen and hormone metabolism through mechanistically distinct pathways. Saw palmetto lipidosterolic extract (45% fatty acids) inhibits both type 1 and type 2 5α-reductase, reducing DHT formation in prostate and scalp tissue; a 16-week RDBPC trial using standardized saw palmetto oil demonstrated a ~29% reduction in hair shedding, increased hair density, and significantly lower serum DHT versus placebo. Nettle root (0.8% β-sitosterol) modulates local androgen availability via SHBG receptor interference in prostate tissue. DIM (100 mg) reproducibly shifts estrogen metabolism toward 2-hydroxylation — confirmed in multiple human cohorts including a large retrospective analysis of postmenopausal women on estradiol therapy — supporting a favorable 2-OHE1/16-OHE1 ratio without meaningful estrogenic stimulation. Lycopene concentrates in prostate tissue and modulates oxidative stress, apoptosis, and androgen/IGF-1 signaling pathways. Vitamin D (1,000 IU) supports hair follicle cycling via VDR-mediated anagen initiation; vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in androgenetic alopecia patients (OR 4.0 in one case-control series) and correction may restore hair growth capacity. Glycine, alanine, and glutamic acid provide the classical prostate amino acid complex with historical controlled-trial evidence for LUTS symptom relief.
Clinical indications include androgenetic alopecia, mild-to-moderate LUTS/BPH as adjunctive phytotherapy, androgen-related skin concerns, and estrogen metabolism support in men with relative estrogen excess. Notable for practitioners: DIM may alter estrogen exposure in patients concurrently using menopausal hormone therapy — confirm DIM use when managing patch-based estradiol dosing. Chrysin (100 mg) is included as a flavonoid antioxidant co-nutrient; oral bioavailability is insufficient for meaningful systemic aromatase inhibition and should not be presented as a primary mechanism.
